Ángela Ponce, la representante de España en el Miss Universo 2018, no logró clasificar a las semifinales y fue eliminada en la primera ronda.

Fueron 31 las representantes de Europa que compitieron en el Miss Universo 2018. De estas solo clasificaron: Polonia, Bélgica, Gran Bretaña, Hungría e Irlanda.

This is an iconic piece in Spain, also known all over the world; it is a precious reference of my country. To make this wonderful National Costume, @luisfernandezdisenador was inspired by a number of things. The first one being the white villages of Andalusia, since we wanted to honor where I come from (Seville). The white of the villages, of purity... White representing peace, the peace that I bring as my message hand and hand with equality, respect, inclusion and love. A white 'bata de cola' that crosses a river of beautiful red carnations made by @hatsbyroiz. Secondly we had the carnations as inspiration because they are the most typical and recognizable flower of my beautiful country. De esta manera, quedó fuera de la carrera para ganar la corona Ángela Ponce, pese a que era considerada entre las favoritas por los especialistas y el público.

Pese a ello, Ángela Ponce pasará a la historia como la primera mujer transexual que compitió por la corona en Miss Universo 2018.

Durante las entrevistas previas a la final, la participante se mostró muy abierta a hablar sobre su historia, pues considera que con su presencia en un concurso con tanta cobertura mediática podrá ayudar a salvar las vidas de aquellas personas que, como ella, son juzgadas por ser diferentes.

 Miss España también ha dicho que no considera que lo físico defina el género de las personas y que su decisión de someterse a una reasignación de sexo no tuvo que ver con un conflicto con esa idea.

Siempre digo: tener una vagina no me transformó en una mujer. Soy una mujer, ya antes de nacer, porque mi identidad está aquí (en la cabeza), explicó en diálogo con la agencia AFP.

La joven de 27 años tampoco considera válida la expresión "nacer en un cuerpo equivocado" y afirma que no le molesta que se le presente como una "mujer transexual" en el concurso.

A mí no me molesta que me digan transexual. Porque yo soy mujer, pero una mujer transgénero. Me ponga como me ponga, nunca voy a tener ovarios. ¿Por qué me voy a avergonzar de formar parte de la diversidad del mundo, si eso es lo que nos enriquece?, declaró a la web de Hoy en España.

España solo ha ganado una vez en Miss Universo. Esto ocurrió en 1974. La reina fue Amparo Muñoz.
